TWO-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION UNDER EMBANKMENTS

THE PAPER PRESENTS A SERIES OF SOLUTIONS FOR THE RATE OF SETTLEMENT OF EMBANKMENTS HAVING DIFFERENT SYMMETRICAL TRAPEZOIDAL CROSS-SECTIONS, TYPICAL OF HIGHWAY EMBANKMENTS, WHICH ARE FOUNDED ON A SINGLE HOMOGENOUS COMPRESSIBLE CLAY LAYER DRAINING BOTH VERTICALLY AND LATERALLY. THE SOLUTIONS, BASED ON THE TERZAGHI-RENDULIC THEORY OF CONSOLIDATION WERE PRODUCED FOR THE CASE OF INSTANTANEOUS LOADING USING THE ALTERNATING DIRECTION IMPLICIT NUMERICAL TECHNIQUE. THE EFFECTS OF VARYING THE RATIO OF HORIZONTAL TO VERTICAL PERMEABILITY AND THE RATIO OF DEPTH OF CLAY LAYER TO WIDTH OF EMBANKMENT WERE ALSO STUDIED. TO FACILITATE CALCULATION OF THE MAGNITUDE OF CONSOLIDATION SETTLEMENT, VALUES OF SETTLEMENT COEFFICIENT U FOR VARIOUS VALUES OF PORE PRESSURE PARAMETER A ARE PRESENTED. /AUTHOR/
