GRASS-ON-THE-ROCKS SOLVES M23 SLIPS
THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE USE OF A NEW SEEDING AND SOIL TREATMENT TECHNIQUE USED FOR STABILISING SOIL ON THE M23 MOTORWAY. CUTTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE THROUGH A STRATA WHICH CONTAINS SANDSTONES MUDSTONES, CLAYS, SILTS AND SAND. THE WATER TABLE LIES JUST BELOW THE SURFACE AND THE INSTALLATION OF FRENCH DRAINS DID NOT PREVENT TOP SOIL SLIPPING OFF THE BATTERS. COMTEC SUGGESTED 3 THINGS:- (1) SCRAPE OFF ALL THE TOP SOIL FROM THE BATTERS WHERE SLIPS HAD OCCURRED OR WERE LIKELY TO OCCUR (2) TREAT THE EXPOSED FACE WITH ALGINURE GRANULATE (S), WHICH HAS THE ABILITY TO DEVELOP A GOOD CRUMB STRUCTURE WITHIN ANY SOIL (3) WAIT 2 WEEKS, HOPE FOR 25MM OF RAINFALL, AND TREAT THE FACE WITH A MIXTURE OF ALGINURE CLAYCOL, PEAT AND GRASS SEED. THE TREATMENT PROVED VERY SUCCESSFUL. THE CLAY IN THE BANKS ALLOWED WATER TO PASS THROUGH THUS RELIEVING PORE WATER PRESSURE. COMTEC'S BIGGEST PROBLEM IS GETTING THE TECHNIQUE WIDELY ACCEPTED.
