IN ADDITION TO ALCOHOLISM, WHICH IS IDENTIFIED AS THE CAUSE OR JOINT CAUSE OF 45-50% OF ACCIDENTS, THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE EFFECT ON DRIVING PERFORMANCE AND TRAFFIC SAFETY OF THE INHALATION OF TOXIC SUBSTANCES SUCH AS LEAD, CARBON MONOXIDE, HYDRO-CARBONS ETC, AND OF EXPOSURE TO OTHER POLLUTANTS, IRRITANTS OR DRUGS NOT DERIVING FROM A VEHICLE SOURCE. THESE LAST WOULD INCLUDE CHEMICAL OR INDUSTRIAL POLLUTANTS, AND DRUGS OR MEDICATIONS TAKEN BY THE DRIVER. IMPROVED VENTILATION SYSTEMS USING SUITABLY PLACED EXTRACTORS, ARE SUGGESTED AS AN AID TO BETTER AIR CONDITIONS AND REDUCED TOXIC ACCUMULATIONS INSIDE CARS.
