CEM-FIL; A CAUTIOUS BREAKTHROUGH FOR GRC
THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES AN ALKALI-RESISTANT GLASS FIBRE, CEM- FIL, WHICH FORMS A TOUGH, LIGHT AND MOULDABLE MATERIAL WHEN MIXED WITH NEAT CEMENT PASTE. ITS USE HAS BEEN RESTRICTED TO NON-STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS AS ITS LONG-TERM BEHAVIOUR IS UNKNOWN. GLASS REINFORCED CEMENT'S (GRC) PROPERTIES OF DUCTILITY, HIGH IMPACT RESISTANCE AND GOOD FIRE RESISTANCE MAKE IT SUITABLE FOR CLADDING PANELS AND PERMANENT SHUTTERING. POLYGON GRC PANELS PROVIDE A FACING TO THE REINFORCED EARTH WALLS OF THE M62 MOTORWAY. GLASS REINFORCED CEMENT PRODUCTS CAN BE USED WHERE REINFORCED CONCRETE IS TOO BULKY, STEEL FIBRES ARE DIFFICULT TO APPLY, PLASTICS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE AND ASBESTOS IS TOO BRITTLE OR HARMFUL. ALTHOUGH GRC COSTS ALMOST 100 TIMES MORE THAN THE WET CEMENT PASTE IT REINFORCES, ITS PRODUCTION IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE.
