STATUS REPORT ON VIRGINIA'S PROGRAM TO COMBAT DRUG-IMPAIRED DRIVING

Beginning on April 1, 1988, police officers in Virginia were given the statutory authority to require drivers suspected of driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) to submit a blood sample to be tested for drug content. The result of a drug screen test may be used to corroborate an officer's testimony that a suspect demonstrated signs of impairment. This report provides an update on Virginia's efforts to curb drug impaired driving, to introduce specialized drug detection training programs for police departments and the efforts to fully staff and provide detection equipment for testing laboratories.
