RESIN ANCHORS ON DARTFORD TUNNEL
THIS BRIEF ARTICLE GIVES AN ACCOUNT OF THE USE OF A HIGH- STRENGTH, THIXOTROPIC RESIN ANCHOR GROUTING SYSTEM IN THE DARTFORD TUNNEL PROJECT. OVER 15000 SPECIAL REINFORCING STEEL STARTER BARS WERE ANCHORED DIRECTLY INTO HOLES DRILLED IN THE CONCRETE FACE OF THE DIAPHRAGM WALLS USING THIS SYSTEM (CHEMICAL BUILDING PRODUCTS LTD'S "LOKSET P" RESIN ANCHOR SYSTEM), GIVING ANCHORAGE STRENGTHS IN EXCESS OF THE YIELD STRENGTH OF THE BARS. THE 25MM BY 450MM HOLES WERE DRILLED WITH STANDARD ROCK DRILLS THE RESINS INJECTED BY A SIMPLE HAND PUMP AND THE 20MM PRE-CRANKED BARS INSERTED BY HAND INTO THE RESIN FILLED HOLES. THIS ELIMINATED THE PROBLEMS WHICH WOULD ARISE FROM BENDING THE BARS AFTER INSERTION AND ALLOWED A REDUCTION IN THEIR LENGTH OF 450MM. THE TWO-PART RESIN SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO REACH COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS OF 29N/MM2 IN 3 HOURS AND 83N/MM2 AFTER 24 HOURS AT 15 C.
