CORROSION AND THERMAL STRESSING STUDIES OF AN ELECTROPLATED ALUMINUM/STAINLESS STEEL JOINT
Corrosion and heating studies were used to assess the integrity of an aluminum-to-stainless steel joint made by electroplating with nickel. A multitude of corrosion tests including relative humidity, condensing water, immersion in water or artificial perspiration while under tensile loading, alternate immersion in liquid nitrogen and boiling water and long term aging did not cause degradation of joint strength. In addition, heating electroplated joints at higher temperatures and for longer times than would be encountered during welding caused no premature failure of the joint. /Author/
