FATIGUE DAMAGE OF ASPHALT. EFFECT OF REST PERIODS
This paper presents the results of an investigation into the response of a bituminous material to compound-loading conditions. During the course of the tests, the load condition to which the test specimens were subjected was changed in some prescribed manner, this being called the load history. A study was made of the effect of rest periods on fatigue life. The bituminous mix investigated was a base course mix consisting of 60% coarse aggregate (porphyry), 34% fine aggregate (sand), and 6% 40/50 pen grade bitumen. Details are given of the testing technique used. The results of the investigation indicate that a rest period between successive blocks of loading cycles is beneficial if the level of damage incurred between rest periods does not exceed a certain level and that fatigue life will increase as the rest period duration is increased. If rest periods are to be effective in promoting longer fatigue life, strain recovery must take place. /TRRL/
