PLASTIC-IMPREGNATED CONCRETE
PLASTIMPRAEGNERET BETON.
The Concrete Laboratory in Karlstrup, Denmark is working with new methods for producing improved concrete (2-6 times the strength). Experiments have been carried out in co-operation with the Danish Atomic Energy Commission research establishment, Risoe-chemical department. This article describes plastic impregnation of hardened concrete with subsequent cobalt 60-gamma irradiation. By this method it is possible to increase the strength of the concrete 4-6 times, depending on the type of polymer. The relative increase in the splitting tensile strength is on the whole the same, or somewhat more than the increase in the compressive strength. The plastic-impregnated concrete is still a material which has low tensile strength in relation to its compressive strength - their ratio is about 1 to 10. Some of the advantages of polymeric concrete are minimum shrinkage and creep, increased durability under frost conditions and increased resistance to chemicals. The major disadvantages are the complicated process of manufacture and the relatively high price of plastic. /TRRL/
