THE ROLE OF ADHESION IN SURFACE DRESSING
This article describes experiments the results of which gave rise to the concept of the critical adhesion temperature. Details are given of the test rig which was designed to displace bound chippings with a force simulating that found in practice on a road. An investigation into the brittle properties and cohesive strength of binders showed that the onset of brittle failure is some 60 Deg.C below the V.V.T. for average loadings with traffic frequencies of around 100 cycles/second. The testing was used to study the brittle failure of binder holding chippings at V.V.T. and to investigate the initial adhesion which arises from wetting. The effects of water and dust and of coating chippings on the critical adhesion temperature were investigated.
