ROADSTONE ASSESSMENT - AN ART OR A SCIENCE?
A discussion is presented of the aims of roadstone testing: (1) to assess the quality and usefulness of sources of stone, (2) to ascertain whether the type of stone from a given source is changing significantly, (3) to compare samples from a given source to ensure constant quality, (4) to compare stone quality from different sources, and (5) to ensure that stone quality satisfies specification requirements. The usefulness of a number of standard roadstone evaluation tests (e.g. aggregate strength, aggregate abrasion and polished-stone value) is examined together with the use in certain circumstances of non-standard tests such as affinity for bituminous binders and frost resistance. The effect of metrification on roadstone gradings and test standards is also discussed. The paper was presented at a one-day symposium on roadstone held at the University of Bristol on June 28, 1972. /TRRL/
