STUDIES ON THE CUTTING OF ROCK BY ROTARY CUTTERS. PART 2, CUTTING USING A SPHERICAL CHIP AND A MILLED TOOTH CUTTER
The article reviews the development of full-face mechanical boring equipment for continuous rock removal tunnelling operations being used in Japan. Rock cutting experiments are described in which spherical chip and milled tooth cutters, are used. These experiments showed that (1) depth and width of cut increases with pitch of milled tooth cutter, (2) the rock volume fractured decreases with pitch, (3) a large traction force is required when the pitch is large, (4) depth and width of cut depends on rock properties rather than pitch of cutter, and (5) friction force is influenced by the moment produced between the cutter and its rotating axis. /TRRL/
