PROJECT INDEPENDENCE PRESENTS ENERGY OPTIONS, PLUS THEIR COSTS

This article discusses the Project Independence Report prepared by the Federal Energy Administration. It is pointed out that while the report itself does not recommend specific policy actions, it attempts to place the nation's energy alternatives and their impacts in perspective, and focus public debate on the issues and choices this country faces. Past focus has been on particular measures. This report seeks to correct that situation by providing a framework within which to evaluate the individual issues. Data from the report on worldwide crude petroleum product consumption are given, and present and projected values of U.S. energy production and consumption are discussed. Areas for conservation and the projected results of specific conservation measures are indicated.
