SPREADING THE LOAD OVER MORE THAN TWO AXLES
THE CASE FOR SPREADING THE LOAD OVER MORE THAN TWO AXLES FOR RATED AT UP TO 30 TONS, IS PRESENTED. A 14 TONS GROSS SIX- WHEELER CAN HAVE A PLATFORM HEIGHT 5" LOWER THAN A SIMILARLY RATED FOUR-WHEELER SO THAT LOAD-HANDLING IS SIMPLIFIED. AN ADDITIONAL AXLE CAN BE FITTED TO A STANDARD TRUCK CHASSIS TO INCREASE ITS LOAD RATING BUT MINIMUM POWER-WEIGHT RATIOS MUST BE SATISFIED. ALL TRUCKS LEGALLY APPROVED FOR OPERATION ON THE PUBLIC HIGHWAY MUST HAVE AT LEAST 6 BHP OF INSTALLED ENGINE POWER FOR EACH TON OF GROSS WEIGHT. SIX-WHEELERS ARE BUILT TO OPERATE AT THE PERMITTED GVW LIMIT OF 24 TONS. THEY ARE FAIRLY MANOEUVRABLE BUT THEY TEND TO 'TAKE CHARGE' ON TIGHT CORNERS. A RIGID EIGHT-WHEELER, FOR USE UP TO 30 TONS GVW, IS INHERENTLY THE SAFEST TYPE OF HEAVY TRUCK CONFIGURATION. A TABLE GIVES THE GROSS WEIGHT, WHEELBASE, BODY SPACE LADEN FRAME HEIGHT AND TURNING CIRCLE OF 24 MULTI-AXLE LORRIES.
