M27 ADVANCE EARTHWORKS
The use of a conveyor belt system to carry excavated chalk along the line of a future motorway to the full area is described with reference to the construction of the M27 South East Motorway in Portsmouth Harbour. The conveyor had three main elements: (1) a rock-belt loader which fed the material onto the belt; (2) the main conveyor consisting of 16 individual belts which travelled 140m per minute and could carry 1200 tons per hour; (3) an inclined radial discharge conveyor which stacked the material ready for digging. The use of the conveyor resulted in much less nuisance to people living in the area, since noise, dust and vibration were considerably reduced. /TRRL/
