"ALL-IN" SLIP-FORM CONCRETE PAVING. THE M5 TAUNTON BY-PASS ROAD CONTRACT

The single-pass operation described here, which uses an important development of the Guntent and Zimmerman paver, only requires prepared sub-base and machine guidance lines ahead of the machine. An 11.2m wide conforming-plate slip-form paver lays a three-lane carriageway slab incorporating longitudinal and transverse joint features. Sheet polythene membrane is laid from rolls mounted in front of the machine. An articulated conveyor-belt side feeder is supplied from end tippers on the adjoining carriageway. Groove-forming, wire-brush texturing and curing spray, and forming of tied longitudinal joints are all carried out by incorporated equipment. Longitudinal and transverse joints are permanently sealed with preformed sealing-strip. All link and interchange roads are slip-formed in single- lane widths using the prototype CPP60; slip-roads to and from the motorway are also laid in single-width, with the Stothert and Pitt CPP60, using a plate vibrator fluidizing system, and automatic concrete compaction. Crushed limestone coarse aggregates are supplied from Simms continuous batching plant, concrete for link-roads and interchange paving from a Benford PB50 weigh-batcher. The modified slip- form paver was awarded the Concrete Society Award for Innovation in 1973, and the 24-month contract includes 16 bridges and earthworks, as well as the two link-roads. /TRRL/
