THE USE OF EPOXY RESINS FOR PROTECTION OF CONCRETE SURFACES AGAINST CAVITATION DAMAGE
Cavitation damage to the several components of hydraulic structures is a very common problem; in many cases the damage is severe and reduces the life of the components. The problem assumes considerable significance in view of the present trend towards high head structures. The protection of concrete surfaces against cavitation damage, therefore, deserves careful study. Among the many methods that can be used for the purpose, the use of epoxy resins has been receiving increasing attention of late, because of its reportedly satisfactory performance in other civil engineering works such as highway pavements and floors. These resins are highly durable and can be made to adhere strongly to concrete, wood, steel and other substances often with a bond which is far in excess of that of the materials to which they are applied. This paper presents a brief review of the use of epoxy resins for the protection of concrete surfaces against cavitation damage. Results of some investigations of this problem initiated at the Indian Institute of Science are also discussed. /Author/TRRL/
