THE HINDERED SETTLING OF CEMENT PARTICLES IN FRESHLY PREPARED PORTLAND CEMENT PASTES: MEASUREMENT OF THE PHYSICAL CHANGES IN CEMENT PASTES - 2

Tthe paper reports the development of a gamma ray densitometer for measuring the changes in density along columns of freshly prepared cement paste in tall perspex containers. Increases in paste density are observed at all levels in the columns, with the greatest changes towards the bottom. These results indicate that settlement develops in compression. Absence of any significant relative motion among the cement grains is verified by measuring the solids density, particle-size distribution, and chemical composition of samples taken from different levels. The velocities of fall of the particles are calculated from the gamma ray data. After correcting for the rates of hydration-contraction occurring within the pastes, the initial velocities of settlement of the solids at the tops of the columns are found to satisfy a theoretically derived equation in terms of readily measurable parameters.
