MISSION-ORIENTED RESEARCH AND EDUCATION

In his treatise on mission-oriented research and education, the author considers the importance of incentives in mission-oriented work, and the realities involved in integrating a transportation education program into a traditional university structure. The self-selecting, self-serving nature of disciplinary departments is to be expected; as the chief budgetary units of the university, they control incentives and reqards for their faculties. The author proposes setting up "faculty councils", consisting of faculty members active in the various areas. Such a council could well serve the university in assessing, controling and legitimizing the programs of its units.
