AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION OF MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT LOCATIONS
A quick and reliable system has been developed in Rhode Island to pin down the locations of accidents and to detect high accident locations. This system depends on the accident records processing scheme which involves two files with alphabetic descriptions, one of the accident locations and the other of a street and highway system. The location description covers two possible situations: an intersection accident and a nonintersection accident referenced to a nearby intersection by distance and direction. The description of a street and highway system is a geographic base file referred to as the DIME/GBF (Dual Independent Map Encoding/Geographic Base File), which is a computerized version of a typical street map with the addition of features such as streams, railroads, and municipal boundaries. The end result of the accident records processing scheme is a series of computer tabulations describing accidents, their locations and the conditions under which they occurred.
