THE CONTROVERSIAL QUESTION OF THE PEDESTRIANIZATION OF CITY CENTRES
LA CONTROVERSA QUESTIONE DELLA PEDONALIZZAZIONE DEI CENTRI STORICI
IN DISCUSSING THE PEDESTRIANIZATION OF CITY CENTRES TO RELIEVE TRAFFIC CONGESTION, THIS ARTICLE IDENTIFIES TWO BASIC TYPES OF CITY CENTRE: MEDIAEVAL CENTRES WHICH WERE NOT DESIGNED FOR VEHICULAR TRAFFIC AND WHERE PEDESTRIANIZATION IS NOT ONLY POSSIBLE, BUT ALSO DESIRABLE AND IN SOME CASES COMPULSORY, AND MODERN OR MODERNIZED CENTRES WHERE PEDESTRIANIZATION HAS TO BE CONSIDERED AS AN ADDITION TO THEIR LOGICAL STRUCTURE. THE PEDESTRIAN PRECINCT OF THE PIAZZA DEL DUOMO, MILAN, ITALY, IS BRIEFLY DESCRIBED, AS BEING AN EXAMPLE WHICH MIGHT INFLUENCE THE PEDESTRIANIZATION PLANS FOR OTHER CITY CENTRES.
