USE OF LEAN CONCRETE FOR ROAD BASES
The paper reviews briefly the development of cement- stabilised materials in European countries, the UK, USSR, the USA, India and Japan, for the construction of road bases and points out that there are three distinct groups of materials belonging to this type, namely, soil-cement, cement-bound granular materials and lean concrete. Lean concrete is basically intermediate in character between soil-cement and ordinary concrete. The paper gives the mix proportions normally used for lean concrete, discusses the mechanism of its cracking since one of the crucial requirements of the material is the avoidance of cracks in the overlying surface, and suggests the minimum thickness of surfacing required over lean concrete bases. In conclucsion the many advantages of lean concrete are cited, and it is shown that the cost of the material compares very favourably with that of other base materials.
