DESIGN MODIFICATIONS TO WEST GATE BRIDGE, MELBOURNE
After a Royal Commission into the collapse of one span of West Gate Bridge, Melbourne, the Lower Yarra Crossing Authority formed its own Directorate of Engineering in August 1971, to review the design of this 850 m long cable-stayed box girder bridge, and to supervise completion of construction. Following the design review, the Authority decided to retain the original concept and geometry of the bridge, but to replace the earlier proposal for a steel concrete composite bridge deck with a lighter, but stronger orthotropic steel deck, and to strengthen the structure. This strengthening was designed to satisfy the requirements of the German Code D1N.4114, and also the requirements for steel box girder bridges laid down by the Merrison Committee in Britain. This paper summarizes the results of the design review and the design modifications required to the superstructure, and also briefly discusses the integration of in-service and erection requirements.
