TRILATERATION WITH SHORT RANGE EDM EQUIPMENT AND COMPARISON WITH TRIANGULATION
Numerous distances and angles have been observed on a small-scale horizontal control network. The distances were measured by the authors using a short-range electronic distance-measuring (EDM) device, and the angles were measured by students as part of an educational project in triangulation at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. A number of different least-squares adjustments were performed on the data, and these included pure trilateration, pure triangulation, and adjustments which combined both angle and distance observations. The precisions of the various adjustments are displayed as station error ellipses having a 95 percent confidence interval. Some comparisons are made between trilateration, and combined trilateration-triangulation schemes. /Author/
