FIRST EUROPEAN JOB FOR PILOT CUTTER
Details are given of a new type of tunnelling machine being used in Switzerland. The machine is based on a component system and incorporates a pilot cutter. The component system allows modification in diameter ranging from 3.6m to 6.8m, through the exchange of cutter heads and lateral rib jacks. Advance warning of rock formations, and the presence of gas or water, up to 3m ahead, is given by the pilot bit. Also, the advancing machine consitutes a fixed support, independent of the tunnel walls. Steering is by laser beam mounted parallel to the axis of the pilot bit. The machine is made up of 3 sections flexibly connected to two sledges mounted on gliding shoes. A table shows the rotations for the cutter head and pilot bit, force of the cutter head, number of cutters, and required electrical energy at transformer. /TRRL/
