BUILDING VIENNA'S UNDERGROUND
A brief description of a soft ground tunnelling machine and its successful use in Vienna is given. The bade machine has a rotating drum shield with a frontal array of adjustable steel support and cutting plates set in a star-shaped pattern. Ground instability at the face of a tunnel is controlled by the forward thrust of the machine, while material is admitted into the shield in controlled quantities through adjustable gaps between the plates. Correct adjustments of cutting edge shapes, gap widths and plate inclinations allow tunnels to be driven in sand, gravel or clay. Four hydraulic rams exert the pressure necessary to balance the instability of the soil during driving. Details of the drum are given and its construction illustrated. A prototype bade machine has cut 5000M of 6M diameter twin tunning tunnels for the Vienna underground in variable ground conditions. Average advances of 12M per day were achieved with a maximum of 18M per day. A mobile erector at the back of the shield placed the 1.5 tonne cast iron segments into position. The construction of the station tunnels are described. /TRRL/
