THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EUROPEAN STANDARD METHODS OF TEST FOR HARDNESS OF MASTIC ASPHALT

The purpose of this study was to establish the relationship between the existing standard methods of test for hardness of mastic asphalt, to facilitate the conversion of the results obtained according to one procedure into the hardness units obtained according to another procedure. Experiments were carried out which indicate that the methods of the ball indentation type are more accurate than the methods commonly used in England, Germany and France, embodying the use of flat-ended indentation pins or plane indenters. The sutdy includes an attempt to quantify the rheological characteristics of mastic asphalts, that is the temperature suceptibility and the variation of hardness with time. Finally, applications of the findings of the study have been outlined along with numerical examples.
