IS THE ELASTOMER FOIL SUITABLE FOR MOISTURE INSULATION BENEATH GUSSASPHALT?
The authors list the factors which have to be taken into account during the insulation of engineering structures against moisture: Capillary water transport, chemicals, steam diffusion, and stress transfers or cracks resulting from the stresses. In contrast to thermoplastic, PVC- based foils, elastomer foils are able to withstand the high temperatures required for the placing of gussasphalt. The author describes tests in which a butyl foil and an elastomer foil, the latter consisting of a mixture of isoprene and isobutylene-isoprene rubber, were used between a concrete slab and gussasphalt to form an insulating layer. Results of the tests are given. The authors recommend promoting the use of the elastomer foils. /TRRL/
