STUDY OF THE CORROSION OF PRESTRESSING STEEL IN PRECAST ELEMENTS CONTAINING ALUMINA CEMENT

A study was made of the corrosion of prestressing steel in precast prestressed concrete members some of which contained alumina cement, some other Portland cement, in a fairly dry environment. Brittle fracture caused by water occurred in the prestressing steel of two members containing alumina- cement concrete. In all other cases, normal surface corrosion was observed. The depth of carbonation of the alumina cement concrete was in most cases greater than the concrete cover over the prestressing steel. The bearing capacity of precast members is not normally greatly affected by the surface corrosion of the prestressing steel. Temporary wet conditions can however be sufficient to cause the failure of prestressing steel. /IRRD/
