SELF REPAIR OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES
AUTOREPARATION DES ENROBES BITUMINEUX
The fatigue of bituminous mixtures is studied in the laboratory by means of vibrations having a relatively high frequency. On the road, stresses are not as frequent and rest periods between stresses can have a beneficial effect on the lifetime of bituminous mixtures. A bituminous mixture sample was left accidentally under normal atmospheric conditions after it had failed. It was found that failure could occur again only under very important stress. This phenomenon was studied in the laboratory on samples which had been subjected to fatigue on tensile failure. Results show that after fatigue or failure, bituminous mixtures can recover an important fraction of their strength very rapidly. Under favorable conditions, self repair is complete in a relatively short time. It seems however that the application of slight stresses is necessary. If the bituminous layer is sufficiently thick, the weight of the material alone might result in self repair. /IRRD/
