STUDIES OF THE SHRINKAGE OF STEAM-CURED CONCRETE SAMPLES
UNTERSUCHUNGEN UBER DAS SCHUIDEN DAMPFBEHANDELTER BETONPRABEN
Details are given of tests carried out to study the influence of steam-curing on concrete shrinkage on samples of three different sizes preserved under various conditions: (1) at a temperature of 20 degrees C in a relative humidity of 65 percent, (2) in a dry enclosed place with an average humidity of 47 percent, and (3) in the open air under atmospheric conditions. Steam-curing resulted in a reduction in shrinkage. The relation between the shrinkage deformations of steam-cured samples and those of normally hardened samples increases with age and is a function of the size of the sample. Shrinkage deformations in all types of samples stopped after two year curing in a dry atmosphere. Concrete preserved in the open air showed deformations caused by shrinkage and expansion according to the relative humidity of the environment. Variations were particularly noticeable in small samples. The size of the samples was shown to have some influence on the shrinkage deformation time curve and on the shrinkage of steam-cured and normally preserved concrete samples. Its influence on the absolute shrinkage reduction after two years was minimal. At the age of one day, steam-cured samples reached a strength twice as great as that of normally preserved samples. After 28 days, no difference existed between samples. /IRRD/
