INFLUENCE OF THE LOAD APPLICATION METHOD USED ON A SAMPLE FOR DETERMINING THE SPLITTING TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE

Tests carried out at the "Laboratoire de Constructions Hydrauliques a l'Ecole Polytechnique" (Hydraulic Structure Laboratory, Polytechnic School) in Warsaw have shown the influence of the load application method and of the nature of the loading plate on the critical stress value. Various types of concrete and all geometrical shapes of samples were studied using plates of various sizes. Those tests also showed the importance of the size and nature of the aggregate. Errors in the results of tensile strength calculations can reach 100 percent if the influence of the plate and aggregates are not taken into account. The influence of the nature, geometrical shape and dimensions of the plate cannot be ignored even if the width of the plate is inferior to 0.1 of the cylindrical sample diameter or of the height of a prismatic plate. /IRRD/
