GRITTING MATERIALS FOR SYNTHETIC RESIN SLURRY SEALS

If a slurry is used for surface dressings or wearing courses, a very high skid-resistance can be achieved by spreading rather coarse chippings on the surface. Skid-resistance is improved by 1) the presence of sharp edged prominent stone particles in the road surface and by sufficient texture depth, 2) the long-lasting roughness of the particles which gives a high polishing stone value, and 3) a fixed position of the chippings, so that they are neither dislodged by the traffic, nor crushed, nor pushed into the surfacing. From a number of observations of experimental motorway sections, it appeared that calcined bauxite is the best gritting material for synthetic resin wearing courses, followed by corundum and "Dutch chippings" i.e. broken gravel. The use of materials with rounded particles, such as natural sand, is not recommended. The grain size should be at least 3/5 mm, or even 5/8 mm for motorways, and 1/3 mm or rather 3/5 mm for city streets.
