SOME PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF THE GRAVEL-SLAG TECHNIQUE
QUELQUES ASPECTS PRATIQUES DE LA TECHNIQUE DE LA GRAVE-LAITIER
The building of road bases containing aggregates stabilised with slag is a technique more than 10 years old which has been widely developed since 1967. Through this development, A number of sites met with difficulties. The author reviews the latter one by one. Partial defects were observed on some sites after the road has been put into service; on some other sites, difficulties arose before the road was opened to traffic. The study of each case leads the author to propose topics for research (modification of) specification curves, standardisation of procedures, revision of requirements for compaction and moisture content, better-quality aggregates and desirable slag percentage. The economic aspects of the use of sand-gravel slag mixtures (costs of manufacture, price, cost of application) are disussed.
