ANALYTICAL METHOD OF DETERMINING THE CROSS SECTION OF THIN STEEL BEAMS
ANALITICHESKIJ METOD OPREDELENIYA SECHENIJ STAL'NYKH TONKOSTENNYKH BALOK PROLETNYKE STROENIJ
The span of structures was able to be increased thanks to the use of high-strength steel and high thin-walled sections. For a given effort, the optimum height of a beam depends on the thickness of the web; this thickness does not depend on local stability but on the main compressive stresses, therefore on the normal and tangential strength of the metal. Corrective coefficients were calculated for simple and continuous girders to enable tangential strength to equate the main compressive strength. To calculate the minimum quantity of steel necessary, the dimensions of the web and the thickness of the flanges must be taken into account.
