CLASSIFICATION OF THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF ROCKS

Lack of a classification system for rock characteristics leads to inaccuracies in terminology. It is proposed to classify characteristics into physical, chemical and physico chemical characteristics. The author deals with the first group, the only one of interest to geological investigations. A distinction is made between physico-geological characteristics which are acquired during lithogenesis, tectogenesis and weathering, and the physico-technical characteristics, which are a junction of the physico-geological characteristics and which can be subdivided into mechanical, hydro-colloidal, acoustical, thermal, electrical, magnetic and radio-active characteristics.
