EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE SENSITIVITY TO COMPACTION OF LOOSE MATERIALS AS A FUNCTION OF THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION
ETUDE EXPERIMENTALE DE LA SENSIBILITE AU COMPACTAGE DE MATERIAUX MEUBLES EN FONCTION DE LEUR COMPOSITION GRANULOMETRIQUE.
THE STUDY OF THE SENSITIVITY OF SOIL TO COMPACTION WAS CARRIED OUT IN THE LABORATORY IN CLAY (KAOLINITE) AND SAND MIXTURES. TWO SPECIMENS WERE PREPARED FROM EACH MIXTURE BY DIFFERENT METHODS: SOME WERE MIXED MANUALLY, SOME WERE BROUGHT UP TO OPTIMUM PROCTOR. THE INFLUENCE OF THESE TWO METHODS WAS EVALUATED BY DETERMINING THE APPARENT DRY DENSITY OF THE SAMPLE AND THE POROSITY OF THE PARTICLES IN THE SOIL SKELETON. THE MEASURED DATA WERE COMPARED TO THOSE CALCULATED BY MEANS OF A THEORETICAL MODEL OF THE DISPOSITION OF THE PARTICLES IN THE SAMPLES. THE COMPARISON SHOWED THAT IN A MATERIAL WHERE THE CLAY CONTENT INCREASES THE SENSITIVITY TO COMPACTION (VERY MARKED FOR MIXTURES POOR IN CLAY) DECREASES IN SAMPLES CONTAINING AN AVERAGE AMOUNT OF CLAY AND DISAPEARS WHEN THE MATERIAL CONTAINS A HIGH PROPORTION OF CLAY (30%). /TRRL/
