SOIL STABILIZATION BY MEANS OF A BITUMINOUS EMULSION
ESTABILIZACION DE SUELO CON EMULSIONES ASFALTICAS.
DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE STABILIZATION OF SOIL WITH BITUMEN WHICH REQUIRES FLUID BINDERS AT ATMOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE. EMULSIONS HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OF FACILITATING MIXING AND USE OF MORE VISCOUS RESIDUAL BITUMEN (WATER IS MORE EASILY ELIMINATED THAN ORGANIC SOLVENTS). ACCORDING TO THE TYPE OF SOIL, ANIONIC OR CATIONIC EMULSIONS ARE USED. TO OBTAIN A REALLY HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE, SUFFICIENT MIXING WATER MUST BE ADDED EVEN IF THIS MEANS VENTILATION AND DRYING OF THE MIXTURE SO THAT THE LATTER REACHES THE OPTIMUM STABILIZATION MOISTURE CONTENT. THIS MOISTURE CONTENT IS DETERMINED ON SAMPLES WITH A GIVEN BITUMEN CONTENT BY MEASURING THE DENSITY OF THE SAMPLE FOR EACH DEGREE OF MIXTURE CONTENT. THE OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT CORRESPONDS TO THE MAXIMUM DENSITY. A STUDY IS MADE OF THE STRENGTH OF THE MIXTURE UNDER DRY OR WET CONDITIONS, IN THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF ACTIVE EARTH. THE BITUMEN PROPORTIONING IS CARRIED OUT ACCORDING TO ASTM SPECIFICATIONS BY MEANS OF HUBBAR-FIELD TESTS. /TRRL/
