SHIPBOARD AND SHORESIDE CONVEYOR SYSTEM
As an alternative to fork lift trucks, cranes, loaders, etc., the Stockholm Company, AB Nordstroms Linbanor, has developed the Walking Beam and Running Beam conveying system for transferring unit loads and containers from shoreside storage areas to the vessel and vice versa. In the Walking Beam system, the transport lines are built in units about 10 m long. They can be arranged in line or at right angles to permit full utilization of the available storage space. The system is technically and economically viable up to a length of 100 m. Each line is built up with one or more sections, each one consisting of three units provided with hydraulic shuttles. The load is lifted only a few centimeters above floor level or conveyor frame and is pushed along hydraulically in the desired direction. The Running Beam system incorporates a carriage, the Running Beam, driven back and forward along the transport line by a chain transmission running over a driving and tensioning sprocket mounted at each end of conveyor line. It is ideally suited for permanent installation in terminals and on board ships. When installed in both, it facilitates the automatic transfer of containers and other heavy units from the holds to a parking place in the terminal, or vice versa. Since the channel rails on which the carriage runs are very low, they can be placed on all decks, and by including them in the hatch cover structure both sides of the hold are served.
