BEARING CAPACITY OF A FOUNDATION ON A SLOPE
FORCE PORTANTE D'UNE FONDATION SUR UNE PENTE
A theoretical and experimental study is presented of the bearing capacity of an inclined soil with a view to applying it to the stability of buildings, bridge piers, walls, heavy machinery, etc. The soil follows the Coulomb Law (cohesion C and angle of friction PHI). Calculations are carried out in two dimensions assuming there is a symmetrical slope on both sides of the foundation. Hypotheses and approximate calculations are described in detail and the numerical values of the bearing capacity are given in the form of tables. The validity of the method is examined. The theoretical study is compared to an experimental study conducted on a two-dimensional analogic model of small rollers. An extensive bibliography is appended together with examples of cases where, although calculation hypotheses are not closely followed, it is reasonable to think that the above method gives an approximate value of the bearing capacity.
