EARTHWORKS PROBLEMS IN CHALK
PROBLEMES DE TERRASSEMENT DANS LA CRAIE
The percentage of paste or fines has a marked influence on laying conditions. This percentage is mainly a function of the nature of the chalk, which is more or less subject to loosening, and of the number and nature of handling operations to which the chalk is subjected. Research was conducted to develop empirical tests which would enable these factors to be understood. The tests developed were: vibratory crushing tests, and repeated compaction tests. In-situ observation of laying and long-term stability of chalk embankments led to the establishments of recommendations for the geotechnical study of chalk materials and laying conditions as a function of the nature of the chalk and geometry of the structure.
