STUDDED TYRES-TESTS ON SURFACINGS AND EQUIPMENT
LES PNEUS A CRAMPONS - ESSAIS SUR LES REVETEMENTS ET LES EQUIPEMENTS.
THE STUDY OF STUDDED TYRES WAS CARRIED OUT ON THE CIRCULAR TEST TRACK OF THE PONT A MOUSSON RESEARCH CENTRE. THE CONCLUSIONS REACHED ARE AS FOLLOWS: 0/14 BITUMINOUS MIXTURES HAVE A HIGHER RESISTANCE THAN 0/10 MIXTURES; HIGHLY COMPACTED MIXTURES WITH A HIGH FILLER CONTENT HAVE THE HIGHEST STRENGTH: THE LOS ANGELES COEFFICIENT IS NOT A SATISFACTORY CRITERION FOR EVALUATING THE RESISTANCE OF A BITUMINCUS MIXTURE TO STUDDED TYRES, IN PARTICULAR BITUMINOUS MIXTURES CONTAINING CRUSHED AGGREGATES OF ALLUVIAL ORIGIN BEHAVED VERY SATISFACTORILY; THE WEIGHT OF THE STUDS HAS A MARKED INFLUENCE ON THE RATE OF WEAR; COMPOSITE STUDS ENCASED IN PLASTICS RESULTED IN TWO TO THREE TIMES LESS WEAR THAN STUDS ENCASED IN METAL. /TRRL/
