H.S. DRINKER: TUNNELS

Reviewed here is the book, "Tunneling, Explosive Compounds and Rock Drills" by H.S. Drinker, (1878) in which the author has assembled (through correspondence with tunnel builders at home and abroad) a comprehensive and detailed record of "previous experience", and provides an evaluation of the pros and cons of the various tools and alternative methods and procedure available in his day. The history of tunneling is reviewed, and the discovery of explosive compounds is described. Detonation and blasting, and the use of rock drills is discussed. Tunneling systems or methods are detailed and include the soft rock or ground methods associated with English, Austrian and American systems. Drinker describes and illustrates a number of tunnels in connection with his studies of the development and use of modern methods, and details the application or rock drills and high explosives in six leading modern tunnels. Tunnel surveying is also discussed.
