VELOCITIES OF SNOW MELT RUNOFF IN FORESTS AND FIELDS
The results are presented of 74 measurements of the rates of travel of snowmelt runoff in forest plantings (over the forest flow) and in open sectors (plowed land and sod). The measurements were conducted in field and forest runoff plots (in the U.S.S.R.) where the timber ranged from 24-25 years, its fullness ranged from 0.6-0.8, and the undergrowth was of average density. In some of the sectors of measurement, the soil was thawed, while in others, it was frozen. Tables are presented of the average rates of runoff of snowmelt over various types of surfaces and at varying depths of the water layer. The results indicate that the runoff rate is directly proportional to the slopes. At an increase in the depth of the water layer, the velocity increases regularly both in forest and field, and upon breaking through from under the snow, the velocity of the streams increase about 5 times. If the soil in a forest is thawed and in the field is frozen, or if it is frozen both in the forest and field, the runoff velocities in the forest are less in the field.
