AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE BEHAVIOR OF SAND IN A MODEL SILO
In this discussion of the paper it is pointed out that provided one could establish a correct value for Janssen's K in the static condition, one could use it to obtain K sub 1, since there was a simple relation between them. In discharge conditions, it is possible to use the author's equation, and use a value of K sub 1 = 2K, where K has been previously determined for the static condition. Comments are made by participants which relate to the movement of material within a silo and measuring apparatus, and which warn against the use of Janssen's theory within the depth of about 2 or 3 silo diameters. The point is made by the author that there is a discrepancy between granular material such as sand and power-like materials such as cement. Questions were raised relating to the angle of friction, the measurement of stresses on the base, the presence or abscence of arching action, and pressure scale values. The author also answered questions regarding lateral pressure when the silo was being emptied.
