THOUGHTS ON DEVELOPMENTS IN ELEVATED ROAD CONSTRUCTION
GEDANKEN ZUR WEITERENTWICKLUNG IM HOCHSTRASSENBAU
The authors present elevated roads in Dresden, Halle, Wismar and Neubrandenburg which have been designed and completed by the road design and engineering bureau of the German Democratic Republic. From these examples are derived certain facts relating to the further development and standardization of elevated roads. It is for example important that long engineering structures in built-up areas nearly always have to be adapted to existing alignments, and thus will seldom be straight sections. From the start of design the engineers should cooperate with town planners. the design and construction of elevated roads and similar structures can be undertaken in steel, steel composite or massive construction, and latter is predominant in East Germany. Possible ways of standardizing the cross-sections of the superstructure are discussed, which is a more complicated problem than would appear at first. The most commonly used cross-section the world over is the hollow girder. In East Germany carriageway widths are established at 7.5 M for the two-laned road and 11.0 M for the three-laned road.
