PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE WITH TUNNEL-LIGHTING INSTALLATIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS

Practical experience of tunnel illumination designed along the lines of the recommendations made by the Illuminating Society of the Netherlands in the early 1960's is reported. Studies of five major road tunnels indicate that when the tunnels have been in use for a while, not all the requirements are fulfilled. Two major points still to be solved question the exact adaptation luminance outside the tunnel and how it can be determined, and how far the recommendations can be toned down for tunnels that carry little traffic. Primary items of these recommendations require avoidance of a "black-hole" effect at the entrance of the tunnel, luminance of the road surface and lower portions of the walls in the interior at 10-15 cd/m squared maintained value, a gradual transition between the threshold zone and the interior, and avoidance of disturbing flicker effects. /HRIS/
