PROBABILISTIC ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF A RETAINING WALL
The discussers of the paper point out the inadequacy of the currently utilized safety factor techniques, and show that the magnitudes of conventional safety factors are meaningless for comparison purposes. The opinion is expressed that the additional random variables, "bias factors" should be introduced into the equations. Bias factor on earth pressure and on bearing capacity are defined and discussed. The influence of the bias factor-on earth pressure, on the prediction of sliding resistance is also discussed. The determination of the bias factors on final design is outlined. The discussers comment on the basis for the choices of parameter variation, and observe that since field scale failure planes are considerably larger than those imposed on laboratory shear specimens, the statistical descriptors for shear strength parameters for in-situ failure surfaces will be much smaller than those derived from the population of values obtained from laboratory testing.
