YIELDING OF SAND IN PLANE STRAIN
The discussers comment on the values of psi and phi and present a table of values which may be used to predict values of phi. Close agreement is noted between predicted and experimental values. This indicates the possibility that the prediction of phi values is insensitive to the value of psi. It is concluded from the discussion that the values of psi = sigma sub 2/(sigma sub 1 + sigma sub 3) for different sands at peak deformation in plane stain are in close agreement with each other, considering both calculated and measured values. It is also observed that the predicted values of the angle of internal friction in direct shear, phi sub d, and their relationship to corresponding values of phi sub p appear to be sensitive to psi.
