PLANE STRAIN FORMULATION FOR ELASTIC-PLASTIC BEHAVIOR
The paper presents the development of a solution for a difficulty in the plane strain formulation of elastic- plastic behavior; the problem arising whenever the plastic potential for the soil is specified as a function of all three principal stresses, and this is required in a general formulation. The problem is defined in mathematical terms. To define the plastic strains, the specification of a plastic potential is required. The plastic potential is often taken to be identical to or have the same form as the yield surface. This presentation considers the simplest form of a three-dimensional yield criterion. A simple degenerate axisymmetric formulation is proposed for a case of plane strain by letting the radius become large. Details are given of the axisymmetric situation of a ring load. An alternative procedure is also described. The procedure, in which the difficulties inherent in the elastic-plastic plane-strain analysis are avoided without introducing approximations or numerical inaccuracies, may be used independent of the particular yield criterion or plastic potential used in the formulation.
